Annie Sloan Chalk Paint | Table | 8 Chairs

Saturday, September 29, 2012

I finally painted & finished 8 dining chairs + our table. Late summer Matt put Annie Sloan Chalk Paint in his sprayer and sprayed the chairs. That helped in getting all the nooks & crannies covered. Then the detail work began. I mixed mineral spirits with the dark wax recommend by Annie in her book. I'm so happy I tried that technique. I love the look of it!  Beware it's stinky, messy and took over hours to work on the chairs. {did I mention hours?} So worth it though!

Needless to say, I'm not fond of painting chairs. The table was easier, but still used 3 coats of paint
French linen, Old White {which was still too white for this house} then settled on the top coat of Old Ochre I loved the Old Ochre color, still fairly light colored, but fits in this house with our tone of woodwork. I sanded & waxed and then some.  {I'm going to try to make homemade chalk paint--my husband guessed it right, you can add plaster of paris to your paint} Thrifty? Yes, please, recipe here.

Our limelight hydrangeas have faded to a dirty pink | brown | limey green tones and I plucked off a basket full and decked out our table with nature's bounty!

It's time for our annual woods walk and we'll be be hunting & gathering nature's finest this coming weekend. Love fall......
p.s. have you been sipping pumpkin spice lattes? I heard painting goes better with your favorite fall drink in hand, no?

LOL - wine works nicely too for painting -
I'm amazed when I hear people spray with ASCP - you must think it out quite a bit? Because that's got to be costly!!!
Your newest follower - would love to have you follow back when you have the time!

Kara, Try calcium carbonate instead of the Plaster of Paris, which makes your latex thick and doesn't mix as smoothly. Using the cc doesn't require adding water to thin the paint, either. I've had excellent luck with my mixtures. I got it at a local health food store.
Glad your table and chairs turned out well w/the ASCP. :-)

How fun to get a project like that finished!! Very pretty. I want to try chalk paint.

I've been craving pumpking spice lattes, but Starbucks is not close by and the homemade one I tried last fall did not measure up.

Great idea to mix mineral spirits with the dark wax... I can imagine it's much easier to apply and not near so dark in the end. I have the french linen and the county white. Love both but choosing only one is a bit too much for me, also. Next up? I'm buying the ochre and seeing if I like that one better. Have fun on the annual woods walk... sounds like fun!

I think you will love the ochre & the dark wax tip From Annie! I peeked at your junk bonanza findings (love) & ochre would fit in your palette!

It's fun to see the tips Annie has - need to spend some time watching more tutorials. I continue to buy her paint because I love that I can paint in my house and not worry about fumes harming my kids. This way I can paint stuff all winter long. For a project as big as yours though making your own would be cheaper! The stuff I've done is all small and the paint goes a long way - especially if you thin it. good luck with making your own - you can do whatever color you love form any brand of paint!
